Volvo Trucks Launches 80-Tonne Electric Truck with Extended Range

GOTHENBURG, Sweden, Sept. 14, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- Volvo Trucks has unveiled a new 80-tonne electric truck with an extended range, marking a significant advancement in heavy-duty electric transport. The new vehicle is designed to handle truck and trailer combinations weighing up to 80 tonnes, setting a new benchmark for electric truck transport in the industry.
According to Jan Hjelmgren, Senior Vice President of Product Management at Volvo Trucks, the new electric truck is tailored for heavy transport operations, particularly in markets where trucks and trailers often exceed the European average weight. The truck is equipped with a versatile powertrain, offering a range of up to 450 kilometers on a single charge for a gross combination weight of 64 tonnes. For heavier loads, the range drops to 420 kilometers for gross combination weights of 74 and 76 tonnes, which are allowed in Sweden and Finland, respectively.
The new electric truck is part of Volvo Trucks' ongoing efforts to electrify heavy-duty transport, which the company believes can significantly reduce both transport costs and environmental impact. "High total weights in truck transport lower both transport costs and environmental impact. If we also electrify these transports, we take an important step towards more sustainable transport," Hjelmgren explained.
The new truck features a 640 kWh battery, which can be charged using both the Megawatt Charging System (MCS) and the Combined Charging System (CCS2). The truck also includes hub-reduction axles, which provide better ground clearance and improved startability for higher gross combination weights. This makes the truck particularly suitable for applications such as on-road timber transport or lighter construction work.
Volvo Trucks plans to roll out the FH Electric rigid truck gradually across several markets, including Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Switzerland, starting in early 2027. The truck will be available in all Volvo FH cabs except the XXL cab, with both standard and Aero cabs being offered.
The new electric truck is part of Volvo Trucks' broader strategy to reduce emissions and promote sustainable transport solutions. The company's new generation of electric FH, FM, and FMX trucks, launched earlier this year, have already set new standards for electric heavy-duty trucks. With the introduction of this new 80-tonne electric truck, Volvo Trucks continues to push the boundaries of what is possible in electric heavy-duty transport.
