Volvo Group Plans Large Energy Park in Mariestad

GOTHENBURG, Sweden, Sept. 10, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- Volvo Group is expanding its operations in Mariestad, Sweden, by announcing plans for an energy park that will support the growing demand for battery-electric vehicles. The initiative aims to bolster grid stability and pave the way for sustainable energy solutions.
The energy park, set to be one of the largest in Sweden with a capacity of 70 MW/260 MWh of battery storage, is being developed in two parallel tracks. The first track involves the establishment of a large-scale battery storage facility, while the second will serve as a test bed for innovative energy solutions. This dual approach is expected to contribute significantly to the transition towards a more sustainable and resilient energy system.
According to Lars Stenqvist, responsible for the development of the Mariestad site at Volvo Group, the energy park is a natural next step in the company's expansion. "This initiative is a key part of our strategy to support the decarbonization of the transport sector and strengthen our industrial cluster in the region," Stenqvist stated.
The battery storage facility will be operational by 2027 and will provide flexibility and stability to the regional energy market. The stored energy can be released back into the local grid when needed, enhancing energy access and resilience. The park will also serve as a demonstration site for customers, showcasing real-world applications of energy solutions.
The energy park is part of Volvo Group’s broader efforts to transition towards fossil-free transport solutions. The company is establishing a large-scale battery cell production plant near the planned energy park, which is scheduled to begin production after 2030. This plant, along with Volvo Group's existing powertrain plant in Skövde, will strengthen the company's industrial and logistics cluster in the region.
