Volkswagen has retained its position at the top of the 2026 Fortune 500 Europe list, marking the German automaker's continued dominance in the region. The list, which includes Europe's largest and most influential companies, saw a shift in the top countries contributing companies, with the United Kingdom taking the lead from Germany. The UK now hosts 76 companies on the list, followed by Germany with 73 and France with 66.

This year's Fortune 500 Europe list reveals a 4% increase in total revenue, reaching $15.5 trillion. Despite this growth, the overall profit margin has decreased to 6.5%, down from the previous high of 7.1%. However, profit growth has returned after a 5% decline the previous year, with profits increasing by 3% to just over $1 trillion.

Volkswagen's revenue for the year increased by 3% to $363 billion, widening the gap with Shell, which saw a 5% decrease in its revenue. Shell, the second-largest company on the list, reported a revenue of $230 billion. The financial services sector remains the largest, accounting for 24% of the total revenue, followed by energy and motor vehicles & parts, which together make up over half of the total revenues and profits.

The UK's strong energy presence is evident, with Shell and BP, both based in the UK, securing two of the top five spots. Germany's industrial strength is highlighted by Volkswagen, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz, all of which are among the top 10 companies. France leads in terms of employment, with its 66 companies employing a significant number of people across the region.

Fortune's Lists Director, Grethe Schepers, commented on the significance of the list, stating, "The Fortune 500 Europe is more than a numerical ranking; it is the definitive benchmark of European business scale and a live indicator of macroeconomic transformation. When analyzed strategically, this list reflects current corporate success just as much as it maps where Europe is heading next."

The list also highlights the progress in gender diversity, with women leading 8.6% of the companies on the list, marking the highest number since the list's inception in 2023. There are 43 female CEOs, and the total revenues for women-led firms have increased by 24% to $1.2 billion. BP, led by Meg O'Neill, is the only woman-led company in the top 10, and Engie, with one other woman-led company, is the only one in the top 50.

The list includes a diverse range of companies across various sectors, with financial services, energy, and motor vehicles & parts dominating the top 10. Companies such as HSBC, Banco Santander, and BNP Paribas are among the top profit earners, with HSBC topping the list with over $22 billion in profits.
