EL SEGUNDO, Calif., Oct. 1, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- Varda Space Industries has made history by launching two of its W-series spacecraft on the same rocket for the first time. The W-8 and W-9 vehicles lifted off from Vandenberg Space Force Base aboard the SpaceX Transporter-18 rideshare mission, marking a significant step in the company’s operations.

W-8 and W-9 are part of Varda’s growing fleet of spacecraft, designed for in-space manufacturing and hypersonic reentry. The two vehicles will be managed from Varda’s newly expanded Mission Operations facility in El Segundo.

Both spacecraft carry diverse payloads from government and industry partners. W-8’s interior payload is provided by Canopy Aerospace & Defense, a global provider of advanced thermal protection systems and signal attenuation materials. Canopy’s Smart TPS-F payload monitors the condition of a spacecraft’s heat shield during reentry using advanced fiber-optic sensors to measure temperature, heat flux, and recession.

W-8’s exterior surfaces host next-generation thermal protection materials funded through a government program and the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) through the Prometheus program. W-9’s interior payload is a navigation system designed to collect data during hypersonic flight, also funded through a government program. The exterior of W-9 also hosts advanced heatshield materials from Syensqo, with the nose tile embedded with small samples of next-generation composite materials being developed to advance ablative technologies.

Varda has been steadily increasing its mission cadence and has safely reentered six capsules since 2024. The company has expanded its operational infrastructure to manage multiple vehicles on orbit at once, meeting the needs of its terrestrial pharmaceutical and government partners.

The ability to build, launch, operate, and return multiple vehicles at once is foundational to Varda’s long-term business. More vehicles on orbit mean more frequent returns, more data per mission, and a more resilient pipeline for bringing products home. This launch marks a new phase in Varda’s operations, signaling a shift towards fleet management and routine reentry.
