Valley Youth Theatre Raises Over $175,000 at Annual Fundraiser

Valley Youth Theatre, a nonprofit organization based in Phoenix, Arizona, recently hosted its annual fundraiser, VYTal Affair, at the Herberger Theater Center, raising more than $175,000 in support of its mission to provide professional-level theatre and performing arts opportunities for young people across the state.

Co-chaired by Ryan Tubbs and Tracy Zeeck, the event attracted a diverse gathering of civic, business, and community leaders, including local politicians such as Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego, Paradise Valley Mayor Mark Stanton, and the former mayor, Jerry Bien-Willner. More than 250 guests attended the evening, which celebrated the impact of theatre on young people and featured special performances by cast members from the upcoming season’s production of "Matilda the Musical."

The evening's theme was inspired by this season's opener, giving guests a firsthand look at the talent and dedication of the young performers involved with Valley Youth Theatre. Beyond the performances, the event included a live auction with standout packages, such as a private dinner prepared by Arizona chef Eddie Matney, a VIP experience at Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale, and an exclusive Bourbon Trail experience. Additionally, a paddle raise for pledges of $1,000 or more entered donors into a drawing for a year of date nights at Durant's, and a raffle for two tickets to the Masters Tournament added excitement to the evening.

Valley Youth Theatre recognizes the importance of supporting the arts and youth development, and this event was no exception. The organization extends its gratitude to its sponsors, including Choreographer Sponsor Sanderson Lincoln, Cast Sponsors Globe Corporation, HMA Public Relations, KPMG, Hope and Jay Ozer, Snell & Wilmer, and Womble Bond Dickinson, as well as Crew Sponsors Fiesta Sports Foundation, Stephanie and Brian Quinn, Romero & Co., The Melcher Agency, Rebecca Stenholm, and Twistive. Valet parking was provided by Dee Moore and Mahagani and Laila Carter, while Downtown Phoenix Inc. served as the Beverage Sponsor.

Action Wine + Spirits, TLC Catering, and Hava Java contributed to the festive atmosphere with cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, and one-of-a-kind experiences. The evening not only raised funds but also brought together a community that believes in the transformative power of theatre for young people.

Executive Director Leigh Ann Dolan shared, "I know firsthand what Valley Youth Theatre can mean in a young person's life because I was one of those kids. Seeing the cast of 'Matilda the Musical' perform at VYTal Affair was a wonderful reminder of why this organization matters. These young people are finding their confidence, taking risks, and discovering what they are capable of. The support we received at the event helps us continue creating that kind of experience for the next generation of performers."

Unlike other theatre programs in the Valley, Valley Youth Theatre ensures that all children who want to participate in its mainstage productions are not precluded by financial barriers. The organization does not charge young artists to participate, does not require them to meet ticket or advertising quotas, and does not demand costume or script deposits. This model allows young people from across the Valley to engage in professional-quality theatre regardless of their family's ability to pay.

Board Chair Abbie S. Fink expressed gratitude, saying, "As board president, I've had a front-row seat to what happens when a young person finds a place where they belong. You see kids step outside their comfort zones, find their voices, and realize they are capable of more than they imagined. VYTal Affair brings together a community that believes those experiences matter, and I am incredibly grateful to everyone who helped make this year's event a success."
