BOSTON, Sept. 30, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- Validity, the leading provider of Enterprise AI solutions for digital marketers, has released its Holiday 2026 Consumer Survey, revealing significant changes in consumer behavior and brand trust during the holiday season. According to the findings, nearly half of younger buyers will trust a brand less by the end of the holiday season, a stark shift that underscores the growing importance of managing email volume and relevance.
The survey highlights that an overwhelming 44% of consumers report receiving more promotional emails during the holiday period. This increase in volume has a direct impact on their inbox management, with 36% of respondents stating that the higher volume has led them to miss, delete, or overlook important non-promotional messages such as bills, shipping notices, and account alerts. Every sender contributing to the crowded inbox is essentially paying for this crowding, highlighting the broader impact on the entire inbox ecosystem.
Trust remains a critical factor in email engagement, with 47% of consumers indicating that they are more likely to open a brand's holiday email if they already trust the brand. This trust factor outpaces the influence of discounts or promotions, which are cited by 39% of consumers as the primary reason for opening emails. However, once an email is opened, the content's value is what ultimately seals the deal, with 42% of consumers valuing exclusive discounts and promotions the most.
Despite the challenges, the survey also reveals that trust is fragile. Nearly one in four consumers, and nearly half of Gen Z, report that a brand's holiday email practices have caused them to trust the brand less, buy from it less, or stop buying from it altogether. For a generation that is entering its peak spending years, this loss of trust can have significant long-term implications for brands.
Validity's SVP of marketing, Cynthia Price, emphasized the broader impact of holiday email volume on the inbox ecosystem.
Consumers are seeking more control over their inbox experience. While 22% of respondents would appreciate a temporary "opt down" or snooze option to manage holiday email volume without unsubscribing, a majority are hesitant to fully delegate inbox management to AI. Only 7% currently use AI summaries or annotations to manage holiday email, with interest rising sharply when AI is framed as a filter. Specifically, 25% would use AI to surface the best deals, 25% to highlight relevant messages, and 23% to strip out unwanted ones. However, 36% of consumers say they do not want an AI assistant managing their inbox at all, indicating a preference for targeted help rather than a complete handover.
As brands prepare for the holiday rush, the findings suggest that winning the inbox will require more than just bigger discounts or higher send volume. Marketers who protect trust, respect consumer preferences, and deliver relevant value stand a better chance of earning attention during the holiday season without damaging the customer relationship that carries into the new year.
