U.S. Lumber Coalition Secures Victory in NAFTA Panel Decision Against Canadian Subsidies

WASHINGTON, Oct. 7, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- The U.S. Lumber Coalition has secured a significant victory in its long-standing battle against what it deems unfair trade practices by the Canadian softwood lumber industry. A binational NAFTA panel has once again confirmed that the Canadian industry receives numerous subsidies from the Canadian government, making it necessary to impose duties to level the playing field.

According to Zoltan van Heyningen, Executive Director of the U.S. Lumber Coalition, the panel's decision is a crucial milestone in addressing the longstanding distortions created by Canada's policies.

The Canadian softwood lumber industry has been accused of building and promoting an excess capacity problem. For decades, the industry has relied on a variety of subsidies, enabling it to capture an artificially high share of the U.S. market. In 2025, the Canadian softwood lumber industry had the capacity to produce 3.6 times as much lumber as the Canadian market could consume. This excess capacity has allowed Canadian producers to unload their surplus into the U.S. market, often at prices that are not reflective of the true market value.

Despite talks of diversification to other markets, Canada has recently openly acknowledged it is unable to reduce its dependency on the U.S. market. The Coalition believes that unless Canada addresses its overproduction and focuses on right-sizing its lumber industry to market realities, the imbalance will continue to harm U.S. workers, companies, and forestry-dependent communities.

The U.S. Lumber Coalition is an alliance of large and small softwood lumber producers from around the country, joined by their employees and woodland owners. The Coalition's goal is to address Canada's unfair trade practices and support the full enforcement of U.S. trade laws to allow the domestic industry to invest and grow to its natural size without being impaired by unfairly traded imports.
