YEREVAN, Armenia, Oct. 19, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- The Alliance for Local Leaders International (ALLIES), the California Global Biodiversity Alliance (CalGBA), and ICLEI USA have convened a U.S. local government delegation to participate in the 17th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP17) in Yerevan, Armenia. The goal is to bring a message from American cities and counties to the global stage, emphasizing the importance of translating ambitious global biodiversity goals into practical, local action.

As governments from around the world gather in Yerevan for COP17, U.S. mayors and local leaders are participating in the conference to highlight the critical role of city and community efforts in protecting nature and building resilient communities. Led by CalGBA and ICLEI USA in partnership with ALLIES, the U.S. local government delegation is connecting American cities and counties with their international counterparts and sharing practical approaches to biodiversity, climate resilience, and sustainable development.

The participation of the U.S. local government delegation comes at a crucial moment for global biodiversity efforts. While national governments are negotiating global commitments, local governments are already implementing those commitments on the ground. They are protecting green space, restoring ecosystems, and expanding access to nature, which helps cities withstand extreme weather events, reduce pollution, and improve public health.

The U.S. delegation's participation is part of a broader commitment by ALLIES, CalGBA, and ICLEI USA to strengthen city-to-city connections and ensure that local governments have a meaningful voice in international conversations affecting their communities. Despite the federal government being the only UN member-state yet to ratify the Convention on Biological Diversity, the U.S. delegation illustrates the ongoing commitment from communities across the nation to halt and reverse biodiversity loss.

Throughout COP17, ALLIES, CalGBA, and ICLEI USA will support opportunities for U.S. local leaders to engage with international counterparts, participate in global discussions, and highlight examples of local implementation. The organizations will also elevate the importance of local government participation in advancing the Global Biodiversity Framework's targets for inclusive decision-making and the participation of women, Indigenous peoples, and other communities.

The U.S. delegation's participation at COP17 is a testament to the growing recognition of the importance of local leadership in addressing global biodiversity challenges. By sharing their experiences and successes, the U.S. local government delegation is helping to bridge the gap between global commitments and local action, ensuring that the voices of communities are heard in the global conversation.
