University of the People, a tuition-free online university, has reached a significant milestone by becoming the largest university in the United States with an enrollment of 271,095 students. Founded in 2009 by Shai Reshef, the institution has expanded its reach to more than 216 countries and territories, offering accredited degrees in business administration, computer science, health science, and education.
Reshef, a pioneer in higher education, believes that education should be a universal right. "Crossing 271,000 students and becoming the largest university in America is proof that when you remove the price tag, talent and ambition are everywhere," Reshef stated.
The university's unique model has enabled students from diverse backgrounds to access high-quality education. B.N., a computer science graduate from Africa, shared, "UoPeople did not just give me a world-class education, it gave me a second chance." D.M., a business graduate from the United States, echoed, "The only way I was able to get out of homelessness was because of the education UoPeople provided me."
A.D., from Afghanistan, added, "When the Taliban decides for us that we don't deserve education....opening the gates to enrich ourselves to better ourselves is the best the world can do for us."
The success of UoPeople is a testament to the future of higher education, which Reshef believes is all about access. "Surpassing every American university in enrollment shows that the future of higher education is all about access," he said. "We intend to keep growing, keep innovating, and keep proving that a world-class education belongs to everyone, not just the few who can afford it."
UoPeople's accreditation by the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC) further underscores the institution's commitment to maintaining high standards. This accreditation, shared with prestigious institutions such as Stanford and UC Berkeley, ensures that UoPeople's degrees are recognized and respected by employers and academic institutions alike.
