Two new exhibitions at UNCG's Weatherspoon Art Museum explore paper and human emotions
The Weatherspoon Art Museum at UNCG has unveiled two new exhibitions, each offering unique perspectives on art and human experience. "Art on Paper" and "Body and Soul, Humanist Visual Languages" are now on display, inviting visitors to explore the creative potential of paper and the profound emotions evoked by art.
"Art on Paper 2026: The 48th Exhibition," curated by Emily Stamey, brings together 15 contemporary artists who push the boundaries of paper through innovative techniques. This year's exhibition features large-scale works that challenge traditional perceptions of paper as a medium. Notably, Jean Shin's "Chance City," constructed from 32,404 discarded "Scratch & Win" lottery tickets, stands at 7 feet by 21 feet by 10 feet, showcasing the unexpected beauty of discarded materials.
In contrast, "Body and Soul, Humanist Visual Languages" invites visitors to delve into the personal and shared experiences represented in the works. Curated by Elaine D. Gustafson, this exhibition includes 35 pieces from the museum's extensive collection, exploring themes of identity, memory, care, and vulnerability. Leslie Fry's "Release," a sculpture of hands draped over a black pedestal, captures the human impulse to hold on during uncertainty, reflecting the exhibition's name.
These exhibitions continue the Weatherspoon's mission to engage the broader community and promote dialogue through art. "Art on Paper" will run until April 18, 2027, while "Body and Soul, Humanist Visual Languages" remains on display through February 13, 2027.
