Traverse Bay Farms, a Northern Michigan specialty food shop, celebrated 25 years of operation in Bellaire and Elk Rapids on September 7, 2026. Founded by Andy LaPointe, the company has grown from a local storefront into an award-winning brand with a second retail location in Elk Rapids.
LaPointe, who has watched the M-88 corridor and local tourism evolve over the past quarter-century, reflected on the changes. "You don't stay on the same street for 25 years without noticing how the place changes around you," LaPointe said. "The corridor today doesn't look like it did in 2001. But the reason people pull in hasn't changed, they want something that tastes like Northern Michigan."
Since its inception in 1999, Traverse Bay Farms has expanded its product line to include salsas, fruit jams, barbecue sauces, salad dressings, and cherry juice concentrate. The company has received 38 honors, establishing itself as a leading player in specialty food markets. Its products are sold nationwide through its online platform, traversebayfarms.com.
"Traverse Bay Farms has adapted to the changing landscape of Northern Michigan tourism," said LaPointe. "From the ebb and flow of the season to the shift in who's stopping in, we've had to evolve to meet customer needs."
The celebration of this milestone includes events at both stores and an online presence. Customers can expect special promotions and offerings throughout September at Traverse Bay Farms' Bellaire and Elk Rapids locations.
According to LaPointe, the company's commitment to staying in Antrim County and its local communities has been a key factor in its success. "We're proud to be a part of the community and to have contributed to the local economy over the years," he said.
As Traverse Bay Farms looks to the future, LaPointe remains focused on maintaining the quality and authenticity that have defined the brand. "Our goal is to continue providing high-quality, Northern Michigan-inspired products that bring people together," he added.
