Travel Baseball Costs Can Reach $25,000 Per Child Per Year

Travel baseball costs can reach nearly $25,000 a year per child, according to new research by Travel Baseball Authority. The findings come after a recent Wall Street Journal report highlighted the rising price of youth baseball, noting that spending around $10,000 a year is common for travel ball families.

Travel Baseball Authority breaks down the expenses, revealing that team dues and tournament fees alone can run between $300 to $800 a month. When travel, uniforms, bats, and other equipment are included, the real out-of-pocket cost can reach $450 to $2,600 a month.

To illustrate the financial impact, Travel Baseball Authority shared the actual spending for the 2026-2027 season for three brothers who all play travel baseball. The 11U player, who only participates in local tournaments, spends about $6,600 a year. The 13U player, also playing only local tournaments, also spends about $6,600 a year. However, the 15U player, who participates in mostly out-of-state national tournaments requiring airfare, hotels, and rental cars, incurs costs of about $24,750 a year.

The research also indicates that costs tend to rise as players get older. High school-age tournaments are more expensive, top teams travel out of state more often, and older players need more expensive equipment, such as BBCOR bats and wood bats.

Simon Chan, founder of Travel Baseball Authority and father of the three players, shared his experience.

The Travel Baseball Authority guide also offers tips for saving money. One family saved thousands of dollars a year by playing only local, driving-distance tournaments until age 12, skipping the newest, most expensive bat models and buying last year's models at a huge discount, and cooking and meal prepping instead of eating out at tournaments.
