The Town of Sullivan has been awarded a $646,099 grant from the NY PLAYS program, a part of Governor Kathy Hochul’s Unplug and Play initiative. This funding will be used to transform Sullivan Park's playground, expanding it by 30% and creating a more inclusive and accessible space for children of all abilities.

The existing playground, which has been in use for approximately 27 years, will be replaced with modern, universally accessible equipment. The project will not only enhance the recreational space but also improve the surrounding area and drainage system to support the expansion and ensure enhanced safety. The new playground will incorporate sensory-rich play features, offering opportunities for physical, social, imaginative, and developmental play. This design aims to reduce barriers for children and caregivers with mobility or sensory differences, encouraging interaction and participation among children with and without disabilities.

Sullivan Park serves as a vital recreational hub for residents and families from surrounding communities, including more than 2,000 homes within walking distance. The park also provides opportunities for thousands of additional Town of Sullivan residents. The project is a collaborative effort involving various stakeholders, including the Town of Sullivan Parks and Recreation Director Lori Davies, Park Superintendent Louie Laplante, Grant Writer John Pinard, Town Highway Superintendent Andy Busa, and the Town Board. The Madison County Soil and Water Conservation District and other community partners have also contributed to the project's development.

The Town of Sullivan anticipates moving forward with the next steps of the project following the completion of the required grant and project requirements. Construction of the new playground is expected to be completed by May 2027. The Town plans to close the playground at Sullivan Park on October 15, 2026, and will provide additional information regarding the project timeline and construction as details become available.

The NY PLAYS grant, part of the $67.5 million program overseen by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and administered by the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (DASNY), will support municipalities and nonprofit organizations in creating, expanding, and renovating public playgrounds across New York State. This initiative aims to expand opportunities for children and families to spend time outdoors, be physically active, and connect with one another.
