TOKYO firms join forces to advance ADAS and autonomous driving technologies

TOKYO, Sept. 1, 2026, The Autoware Foundation and Renesas Electronics have entered into a partnership aimed at accelerating the development of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving technologies. Renesas, a leading semiconductor supplier, has joined the highest membership tier of the Autoware Foundation, which will see the integration of Autoware's open-source end-to-end AI stack onto Renesas' R-Car SoC platforms.

This collaboration is expected to deliver a range of ADAS and autonomous driving solutions, from entry-level L2 systems to fully autonomous L4 robotaxis, making them more accessible and cost-effective for automotive Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and Tier-1 suppliers. The partnership brings together the strengths of both entities, combining Renesas' hardware expertise with Autoware's open-source software to provide scalable and customizable technologies.

"Joining forces with Renesas is a pivotal step in the evolution of the ADAS and autonomous driving industry," stated Christian John, Board Director at the Autoware Foundation. "Our open-source technology stack, when integrated with Renesas' R-Car SoC, offers a low-cost and flexible solution that can be tailored to specific vehicle and use-case needs. Aish Dubey, Vice President and Head of the High-Performance Computing (HPC) SoC Division at Renesas Electronics Corporation, emphasized the significance of this collaboration. "The automotive industry is moving towards integrated platforms that combine computing, AI, and open software technologies," Dubey said. "Our partnership with the Autoware Foundation will enable OEMs and Tier-1 suppliers to reduce integration complexity and expand their options for deploying AI-driven ADAS and automated driving systems."

Under this new collaboration, automotive OEMs and Tier-1 suppliers can now leverage Autoware's open-source end-to-end AI stack, which is supplied under the Apache 2.0 license. This licensing model allows for full commercialization without restrictions, providing a robust and customizable foundation for developing autonomous driving technologies. The integration of Autoware's software on the Renesas R-Car platform enables these companies to retrain, tune, and customize the AI stack for their specific needs, offering a more efficient and cost-effective alternative to traditional commercial suppliers.
