Tianmen Mountain in Zhangjiajie, China, is set to undergo a significant change starting October 13, 2026, as the main cable car will be closed to visitors. According to China Fantasy Travel, a licensed travel agency based in Zhangjiajie, the closure of the main cable car will see visitors switch to Line C, which offers an alternative route to the summit of Tianmen Mountain.
Tianmen Mountain, located above the 99-bend road, is a popular tourist destination known for its Tianmen Cave. The cave will remain accessible, and visitors can ascend to the summit using Line C. The journey up to the square below Tianmen Cave will be made via the Tianmen Cave express cableway, which is free and takes approximately 20 minutes. From there, visitors can continue their journey to the summit using escalators.
Ticket prices for Line C remain unchanged. An adult ticket costs 288 yuan, which includes insurance. Visitors aged 60 to 64 pay 152 yuan, and those aged 65 and over pay 116 yuan. Foreign passports are accepted for the age rates. The visit still takes about 4 to 6 hours, and all three glass skywalks on the summit were open as of October 1.
China Fantasy Travel advises that visitors arriving on or before October 12, 2026, can continue to use the main cable car as normal. However, from October 13 onwards, the main cable car will no longer be operational, and visitors will need to switch to Line C.
The company notes that the shuttle bus between the city cableway station and the Mountain Gate will continue to operate, and the city station will keep its ticket window and service desk. The shuttle is free and takes about 20 minutes.
For same-day departures, the company suggests going in early and booking a train at 4 pm or later.
The closure of the main cable car and the switch to Line C is part of a broader effort to improve the visitor experience and manage the flow of tourists. The move is expected to reduce wait times and provide a more seamless journey for visitors to the iconic Tianmen Mountain.
