The McPhillip Firm offers $25,000 scholarship for first-generation college students

Atlanta-based law firm The McPhillip Firm has launched a $25,000 scholarship for first-generation college students, aiming to support the educational journey of students embarking on their higher education in Fall 2026.

The scholarship, which is open to applicants in any field of study, was created by founder Sean McPhillip, who himself is a first-generation college graduate from New York University. McPhillip, a 2020 graduate of The McPhillip Firm, recalled the pivotal role that his academic scholarship played in his life, stating, "Receiving an academic scholarship was an important opportunity in my life, and I have never forgotten what that support made possible."

According to the scholarship criteria, applicants must be graduating high school seniors who will be the first in their immediate family to attend college, with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. The deadline for applications is October 31, 2026. The one-time award is designed to alleviate the financial burden often faced by first-generation students, many of whom graduate at lower rates compared to their peers.

Sean McPhillip explained, "I hope to extend that same kind of support to another first-generation student as they pursue their educational path, whatever that path may be."

First-generation students make up approximately one-third of college attendees in the U.S., but face unique challenges, particularly in terms of graduation rates. According to the Pell Institute's "Moving Beyond Access" report, only 11% of low-income, first-generation college students graduate within six years, compared to 55% of higher-income, non-first-generation students. The McPhillip Firm's scholarship is meant to address these challenges and provide substantial financial support to students starting their academic journey.

Eligible applicants must submit a two-to-three page essay detailing their career objectives, a transcript or other proof of GPA, and proof of college acceptance. The scholarship is open to students entering any accredited college or university, and there is no requirement to pursue a legal career or demonstrate an interest in law.

The McPhillip Firm's scholarship aims to not only provide financial assistance but also recognize the unique challenges faced by first-generation students. The firm's founder, Sean McPhillip, said, "The goal is to help these students start their college careers with the support they need to achieve their academic and professional goals."
