OVERLAND PARK, Kan., Oct. 5, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- The Golden Scoop, a nonprofit ice cream and coffee shop that provides meaningful employment and job training for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, is closing its first location at 9540 Nall Ave. on Saturday, October 31st, and moving its operations to a food truck. The shop, which opened in April 2021 to lines that wrapped around the strip center, has outgrown its space almost immediately and has since expanded to a second, larger location with a drive-thru at 104660 W. 103rd St., just a few miles away.

However, the organization sees a bigger opportunity in the move to a food truck.

The food truck will be available for booking at various events across the Kansas City metro, including offices, schools, ballfields, festivals, and backyard parties. All current employees who have worked at the 9540 Nall Ave. location will continue to work with The Golden Scoop, whether at the 103rd Street shop or on the truck.

The move comes during National Disability Employment Awareness Month, observed every October. The Golden Scoop opened the month on October 1st with the launch of its Celebrity Scooper program, featuring Kansas State Treasurer Steven Johnson behind the counter, and is closing it out by taking its mission further than any single storefront could.

Fans are invited to stop by 9540 Nall Ave. one more time before October 31st to celebrate the spot that started it all. After that, the 103rd Street shop is just down the road, and the truck is only a booking away. The truck joins a presence that already reaches well beyond the shops, including Golden Scoop pints and cups at area grocery stores and the Golden Connection program, which brings Golden Scoop products into special education classrooms in the Blue Valley, Olathe, and Shawnee Mission school districts.
