The Gateway Family YMCA, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to strengthening communities, is set to celebrate the 33rd Annual National Senior Health & Fitness Day® on October 28, 2026. This event, part of a nationwide initiative, aims to promote active, healthy lifestyles among older adults through physical activity, good nutrition, and preventative care.
Local groups, including The Gateway Family YMCA, will join over 1,000 organizations nationwide to celebrate National Senior Health & Fitness Day. The event is organized by the Mature Market Resource Center, a national clearinghouse for professionals who work with older adults. The Gateway Family YMCA, along with Shaping Elizabeth, Shaping Rahway, and Shaping Union County, will host a Community Open House at Y branches in Elizabeth, Rahway, and Union. The open house will feature a variety of activities, including swimming, group exercise, water exercise, blood pressure self-monitoring, health screenings, and information sessions. Participants can access these services free of charge.
In addition to the physical activities, the Gateway Family YMCA will offer a Virtual Open House for those who cannot easily access the YMCA. This virtual event will provide a schedule of group exercise programs available through Zoom, ensuring that everyone can participate regardless of their location.
Patricia Henze, the program manager for National Senior Health & Fitness Day, encourages all older adults, regardless of their current level of physical fitness, to join in the celebration.
The Gateway Family YMCA also provides chronic disease self-management programs open to the local community. Interested participants can register for the Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring Program (BPSM), Group Lifestyle Balance Diabetes Program, Diabetes Management Program, LiveSTRONG at the YMCA, or the Veterans Wellness Initiative.
During National Senior Health & Fitness Day, participants will join with an estimated 100,000 older adults across the country, participating in local events to promote active, healthy lifestyles. The Gateway Family YMCA is committed to supporting the health and well-being of its community members, offering a range of services and programs designed to strengthen both the body and the spirit.
