Technology employment increases despite tech company staffing reductions

Technology occupations continue to expand across the U.S. economy despite staffing reductions at tech companies, according to a recent analysis by CompTIA, the leading global provider of vendor-neutral technology training and certifications.

In August, employment in technology occupations increased by 86,000 workers, marking a positive trend in the sector. This growth is reflected in the nearly 600,000 active job postings for technology roles across all industry sectors, with 42% of these positions newly advertised. The data, compiled from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) #JobsReport, highlights the persistent demand for tech talent.

However, the tech sector itself saw a slight contraction, with overall staffing reduced by approximately 14,700 positions, inclusive of both technical and non-technical roles. This reduction could be attributed to recent layoffs announced by US-based tech companies. Despite these cuts, the overall employment picture for tech occupations remains robust.

The increasing demand for artificial intelligence (AI) skills is a key driver of this growth. According to CompTIA's analysis of Lightcast data, there were over 320,000 active job postings requiring AI-related capabilities in August, a 4.5% increase from July. This surge in AI-related job postings aligns with CompTIA’s findings that employers are increasingly integrating AI into their operations, necessitating workers who can apply AI tools, manage AI workflows, and support AI-driven initiatives.

The health of the tech talent market is further evidenced by the growth in specific technology roles. Employment in tech support, infrastructure, project management, and cybersecurity continued to expand, suggesting a focus on strengthening core technology functions while also building out emerging capabilities.

Several industry sectors contributed to the overall growth in technology job postings. Professional, scientific, and technical services, manufacturing, and administrative support services generated the highest volumes of new technology job postings. Retail, wholesale trade, and educational services also saw month-over-month gains, indicating a broad and diverse demand for technology expertise across the economy.
