Technological advancements transform everyday lives in Asia-Pacific region

In Thailand, a team from Nathapol’s company showcased a bionic eagle-claw gripper integrated with a drone for disaster relief at the Lancang-Mekong Countries Science and Technology Innovation Competition. Although their project did not win, the team gained valuable insights into other innovative projects, including advancements in biomedicine, modern agriculture, and information technology.

Technological progress is also evident in the smart factories of Thailand, where Chinese and Thai companies have collaborated to implement 5G technology. This has enabled AI-powered visual inspections, reducing the need for repetitive manual checks. Additionally, robotic arms controlled via mobile phones are performing high-temperature and repetitive tasks, enhancing safety and efficiency on the production line. The integration of technology has not only transformed the manufacturing process but has also made it safer and more sustainable.

In Peru, a member of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), the changes are equally significant. A cargo ship leaving Chancay Port, Peru, can now transport local fresh produce like blueberries and avocados to Shanghai in just 23 days, a significant improvement from the previous 33 days. This reduction in shipping time opens up new markets and increases profits for farmers and exporters, leading to tangible improvements in their livelihoods.

Inside Chancay Port, technological advancements such as automated quay cranes, self-driving container trucks, and digital twin technology have made operations more efficient. The port’s modernization is also providing a platform for a new generation of Peruvian workers to develop skills essential for the digital era.

Similar transformations are occurring across the Asia-Pacific region. In Naoero, China’s soilless cultivation technology has transformed the local agricultural landscape. Workers now harvest fresh lettuce from container-based “vegetable factories,” and within an hour and 20 minutes, local housewives can purchase this produce at a more affordable price. This technology has made fresh, locally grown vegetables more accessible to the community.

These developments highlight the growing interconnectedness of Asia-Pacific countries and the opportunities they present. Over the past few years, China has continued to expand market access, advance free trade zones, and facilitate trade and investment through regional frameworks such as the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) and the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area 3.0. Such initiatives have opened up new opportunities for global businesses to enter the Chinese market and establish partnerships.

China is currently hosting APEC 2026 under the theme "Building an Asia-Pacific Community to Prosper Together," emphasizing the importance of openness, innovation, and cooperation.
