Tate & Lyle and BioHarvest Sciences have reached a significant milestone in their collaboration to develop next-generation sweeteners. This achievement marks a critical step in their joint efforts to create innovative sweetening solutions that can support sugar and calorie reduction while maintaining the taste and functionality expected by consumers.
The milestone was announced on October 8, 2026, and it demonstrates that BioHarvest's Botanical Synthesis™ platform is capable of producing the targeted next-generation sweetening solution. This development is part of an expanded collaboration between the two companies, which was announced in May 2026. Both Tate & Lyle and BioHarvest are encouraged by the results achieved so far, with development activities continuing to advance as expected.
Susanna Palatucci, Vice President of Commercial Innovation and Strategy at Tate & Lyle, highlighted the importance of this milestone.
Tate & Lyle, a global leader in ingredient solutions for healthier food and beverages, has been at the forefront of ingredient innovation for 165 years. The company now has more than 5,000 employees working in around 75 locations in 38 countries, serving customers in more than 120 countries. Tate & Lyle recently acquired CP Kelco, a leading provider of pectin, specialty gums, and other nature-based ingredients, to create a leader in mouthfeel. Following this combination, Tate & Lyle now has an enhanced solutions capability.
BioHarvest Sciences Inc. is a Botanical Synthesis company leveraging its proprietary technology platform to develop and manufacture plant-based compositions without growing the underlying plant. Through Botanical Synthesis, BioHarvest produces consistent, full-spectrum plant compound compositions designed for commercial use across consumer and partner applications. The company is increasingly focused on applying its Botanical Synthesis capabilities as a Contract Development and Manufacturing Organization (CDMO), partnering with customers to develop, scale, and manufacture valuable plant-based compositions across multiple industries.
The milestone builds on the expanded collaboration between Tate & Lyle and BioHarvest Sciences, reflecting the continued advancement of their work together on sweetener innovation. Both companies are optimistic about the potential of this technology to support more sustainable access to valuable plant-derived ingredients, reduce dependence on traditional agricultural production methods, and improve consistency and supply reliability.
For the year ended 31 March 2025, and on a pro forma basis which assumes for illustrative purposes that the combination with CP Kelco took place on 1 April 2024, revenue for the enlarged Tate & Lyle Group would have been £2.12 billion. This figure underscores the company's significant growth and expanded capabilities following the acquisition.
This development is part of a broader trend in the food and beverage industry, where companies are increasingly seeking innovative solutions to meet consumer demands for healthier and more sustainable products. The collaboration between Tate & Lyle and BioHarvest Sciences represents a significant step towards achieving these goals.
