Surmodics, a company known for its performance coating technologies, has expanded its operations in Ireland by opening a new facility in Ballinasloe, County Galway. This move brings Surmodics' nearly 50 years of coating expertise closer to the region's thriving medical device industry.

The new Galway facility will house dedicated cleanroom environments specifically designed for medical device coating services. According to Damien Kilcommons, Vice President of Site Operations at the Ireland facility, the expansion will enable Surmodics to work more closely with local medical device manufacturers and technology innovators. "Ireland is home to a significant concentration of medical device manufacturers and technology innovators, making it an important market for Surmodics and our customers," Kilcommons stated.

Surmodics' expanded presence in Ireland is part of the company's broader strategy to strengthen its focus on coatings and biomaterials. The new facility will support medical device companies from early-stage development through commercialization. Customers can engage Surmodics for coating feasibility, process development, coating services, and analytical testing, working with technical teams that understand the challenges associated with device materials and performance requirements.

The company's coating portfolio includes a range of technologies such as hydrophilic, hemocompatible, antimicrobial, and drug delivery coatings. Surmodics also offers both UV and thermal-cure coating platforms, providing customers with flexible options based on device substrate, geometry, performance requirements, and manufacturing needs.

In addition to coating services, Surmodics will continue to provide analytical testing services. These services can help manufacturers evaluate coating performance and better understand factors such as lubricity, durability, particulate generation, and surface characteristics. By offering both integrated and standalone analytical expertise, Surmodics can help customers identify potential issues earlier in development, better characterize device performance, and reduce risk as programs move toward commercialization.

The expansion is part of Surmodics' broader global strategy to strengthen its focus on coatings and biomaterials while expanding global access to its capabilities. "Our commitment towards maintaining our global leadership in coatings and biomaterials brings together a differentiated set of capabilities that can support customers across the development continuum," said Charlie Olson, Senior Vice President and President of Medical Device Coatings.

With nearly 50 years of coating expertise, Surmodics works closely with medical device manufacturers to address complex material and surface challenges, improve device performance, and support programs from early feasibility through commercialization. The company's new facility in Galway is expected to provide customers with local technical and manufacturing support, enhancing their ability to innovate and bring new medical devices to market.
