Sunsei, a new plant-based mineral sunscreen brand, is challenging the traditional sunscreen market with its simplified and eco-friendly approach. Founded by Mika Stambaugh and John Tinsley, the brand offers a new line of sunscreens that prioritize clarity and user-friendly ingredients.
After a melanoma diagnosis, Stambaugh became more conscious of the ingredients in her daily sunscreen. She found existing options either packed with complex and unfamiliar chemicals or thick and chalky, making them difficult to wear. This led her to co-found Sunsei, which aims to provide a more straightforward and pleasant sun protection experience.
Sunsei's product line includes two key offerings: the SPF 30 for everyday use and the SPF 45 for extended sun exposure. Both products feature non-nano zinc oxide as their active ingredient, paired with nourishing plant oils such as sweet almond oil, green tea extract, and shea butter. The brand claims their sunscreens deliver broad-spectrum protection without leaving a white cast, making them more aesthetically appealing and easier to apply.
According to the American Cancer Society, 234,680 new cases of melanoma are projected in the United States for 2026. Sunsei believes that making sun protection a part of everyday routine is crucial, especially as skin cancer rates continue to rise.
"The sunscreen aisle has become a maze of complex formulations and misleading labels," said Tinsley. "We stripped it back to its core elements, ensuring our products are both effective and user-friendly."
Sunsei's approach sets it apart from competitors by focusing on transparency and simplicity. The brand's commitment to using 100% mineral-active sun protection and avoiding synthetic chemical UV filters aligns with growing consumer preferences for natural and eco-friendly products.
"We looked at the sunscreen aisle and thought, why are we all just accepting this?" Tinsley continued. "We wanted to create a product that not only protected but also made people feel good about what they were putting on their skin."
Sunsei is now available exclusively on their website, sunseisunscreen.com. The company's innovative approach to sun protection is expected to attract a growing audience of consumers who prioritize natural and effective skincare solutions.
