The Spondylitis Association of America (SAA) has launched a new awareness campaign, "The Pain Behind the Delay," to highlight the challenges faced by individuals living with undiagnosed spondyloarthritis (SpA). The campaign aims to raise public and healthcare provider awareness about the often-overlooked human cost of delayed diagnosis.

SAA CEO Cassie Shafer emphasized the personal impact of the delay, stating, "For the undiagnosed, the delay isn't simply a number on a timeline. It's years of living with pain, uncertainty, unanswered questions, and the disruption of everyday life."

Spondyloarthritis is a family of rheumatic diseases that can cause chronic inflammatory back pain, joint stiffness, fatigue, and other lifelong symptoms. Despite affecting over 3.2 million Americans, the disease remains underdiagnosed, with a 7-10 year delay in diagnosis being common. This delay is due to a lack of awareness among the public and healthcare providers, as well as the symptoms often mirroring those of other conditions.

The "The Pain Behind the Delay" campaign will run throughout September, focusing on sharing patient stories, educational content, videos, and resources through SAA's digital and social media channels. The campaign is community-driven and encourages people to learn about the signs and symptoms of SpA, listen to those experiencing persistent pain, and help spread awareness of the importance of timely diagnosis.

Shafer explained, "We want to make these experiences visible and help patients, healthcare providers, and policymakers understand why earlier diagnosis matters. By sharing personal stories and educational materials, we can help shorten the wait for accurate diagnosis and treatment."

The campaign aims to educate the public and healthcare providers about the signs and symptoms of SpA, including chronic pain, stiffness, and fatigue. It also seeks to encourage individuals experiencing persistent pain to seek medical attention and to advocate for earlier diagnosis.

SAA provides education, advocacy, support, and research initiatives to improve patient outcomes and advance treatment. The organization encourages anyone interested in learning more about the disease and participating in the campaign to visit the SAA website at www.spondylitis.org.

The SAA's efforts are part of a broader initiative to raise awareness and improve the diagnosis and treatment of spondyloarthritis. By highlighting the human cost of delayed diagnosis, the organization hopes to drive change and improve the lives of those affected by the disease.
