SpiritSeal launches new platform to combat counterfeit spirits and wines

NEWTON, N.J., SpiritSeal, a product of Cerfinity, Inc., has introduced a new authentication platform designed to combat counterfeiting in the premium spirits and wine industries. This innovative solution uses an NFC seal and a permanent provenance registry to verify the authenticity of individual bottles, providing consumers with a simple, smartphone-based method to confirm the genuine origin of their purchases.
The persistent issue of counterfeit and refilled bottles has long been a concern for distilleries and wineries, where the authenticity of a label can significantly impact the value of a product. Traditional methods, such as printed labels, holograms, and QR codes, can be easily cloned, making them ineffective against sophisticated counterfeiting operations. SpiritSeal addresses this vulnerability by binding each bottle to its specific distillery, batch, and barrel, ensuring that each item can be uniquely identified and authenticated.
Each SpiritSeal NFC seal is customized for the individual bottle, linking it to the relevant distillery, batch, and barrel details. For limited releases and single barrels, an optional TagTamper seal can be used to detect the first opening of a bottle, recording the date, time, and location of the event. This information is stored permanently in a provenance registry, allowing collectors and secondary market buyers to verify both the authenticity and the history of the bottle.
"SpiritSeal represents a significant advancement in the fight against counterfeit spirits and wines," said Stuart Fine, Founder and CEO of Cerfinity, Inc. "A counterfeiter can copy a label, but they can't replicate the unique seal we provide. By simply tapping the seal with their smartphone, customers can confirm that their bottle is genuine and has not been tampered with."
The authentication process is straightforward and user-friendly. Distilleries and wineries register their products via a web dashboard, after which SpiritSeal sends tamper-evident NFC seals that can be applied directly to the existing bottling or packaging line. Consumers can then verify the authenticity of their purchase by tapping the seal with their smartphone, instantly revealing the bottle's detailed provenance. The registry, built on Hyperledger Fabric under the Linux Foundation, ensures that the records are secure and immutable, providing a robust foundation for trust.
SpiritSeal is now available for free 30-day trials, allowing distilleries and wineries to test the platform before committing to a full implementation. Interested parties can sign up at spiritseal.com.
