SINGAPORE, Oct. 5, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- S&P Global Ratings has launched a new analytical tool, the Vault Risk Assessment (VRA), aimed at providing independent risk transparency for digital asset lending vaults. This initiative is part of the company’s broader effort to bring institutional-grade transparency to the rapidly evolving digital asset ecosystem, supporting informed decision-making for market participants.
Lending vaults are investment vehicles that operate on a blockchain, pooling investor deposits and deploying them according to defined strategies. These strategies can be fully automated via smart contracts or managed by human managers. As of September 2026, total deposits in vaults reached US$10 billion, marking a significant increase from the US$1.5 billion recorded in September 2024, demonstrating rapid growth in this nascent market.
The VRA is a forward-looking opinion about the overall relative risk of impairment to an investor's position in a lending vault. It provides a comprehensive view of a vault's risk profile across six key factors: portfolio credit quality risk, liquidity mismatch risk, curator risk, blockchain risk, protocol risk, and vault security and governance risk. According to S&P Global Ratings, the VRA is not a credit rating and does not comment on yield levels.
S&P Global Ratings has established itself as a bridge between traditional finance and decentralized finance, leveraging its legacy of trusted risk frameworks, benchmarks, and analytical standards to support the institutionalization of digital asset markets. Recent firsts include the industry's first Stablecoin Stability Assessments, the first credit rating of a DeFi protocol (Sky Protocol), and its first rating of a structured finance transaction backed by bitcoin: "Ledn."
The company also announced an agreement to acquire OpenZeppelin, the security standard for onchain finance, and led a strategic investment in Kaiko, the independent leader in digital asset market data, indices, and data infrastructure. These moves underscore S&P Global's commitment to expanding its presence in the digital asset space and providing comprehensive risk assessments to support the growth of this market.
