Sophia Space and SLI have reached a significant agreement to finance the deployment of a 10-satellite high-performance edge computing constellation. The partnership, valued at $300 million, marks a pivotal step in the commercialization of orbital computing infrastructure.

SLI, an aerospace leasing specialist, will purchase the satellites from Sophia Space and lease them to end-users, facilitating a scalable and non-dilutive capital structure. This innovative financing model, which has been successfully applied to various industries such as transportation and energy, is now being adapted for the space sector.

According to Rob DeMillo, CEO and co-founder of Sophia Space, "Asset financing didn't invent aviation or shipping, but it accelerated them at scale. We're doing the same for orbital computing. This approach with SLI signals that Sophia Space's space infrastructure is mature enough to attract the capital structures that have historically built terrestrial infrastructure."

The constellation, scheduled for launch as early as 2028, will deliver aggregate computing capacity equivalent to 240 state-of-the-art edge servers. This will enable applications in Earth observation, weather analytics, supply-chain management, and disaster preparedness, while also addressing growing demand for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) and other mission-critical security applications.

Praveen Vetrivel, CEO of SLI, explained, "Lowering barriers to entry unlocks markets. Sophia has the technology, the team, and the vision. What had been missing was access to scalable, non-dilutive capital. This framework provides it, giving them the capacity and flexibility they need to build the next layer of digital infrastructure."

The long-term lease is designed to span the satellites' expected useful lives, matching capital deployment with the revenue-generating life of the assets. This approach provides Sophia with a predictable financing structure for scaling its orbital infrastructure without relying exclusively on equity capital.

SLI, a subsidiary of Libra Group, brings over $15 billion in asset financing experience in the transportation industries to the space economy. The collaboration between Sophia Space and SLI reflects a long-term commitment to developing the financing structures and deployment playbook necessary for orbital compute infrastructure to move from the laboratory to low Earth orbit.

Sophia Space is building the future of orbital computing and in-space data centers. Its modular TILE technology enables passive computing alongside in-situ data processing, AI acceleration, and edge computing for satellites, defense systems, and commercial space stations, dramatically reducing latency and delivering actionable insights where and when they are needed.

This partnership is expected to accelerate the deployment of advanced computing capabilities in space, opening new possibilities for data processing, analytics, and mission-critical applications. The collaboration between Sophia Space and SLI is a significant milestone in the commercialization of space-based computing infrastructure.
