Soka University of America expands financial aid to middle-income families
Soka University of America (SUA) has significantly expanded its financial aid program, making a full-tuition education more accessible to middle-income families. Effective with the 2027-2028 academic year, the Soka Opportunity Plan now guarantees 100% tuition coverage for families earning up to $200,000 annually, a substantial increase from the previous $90,000 threshold.
"We are excited to expand the Soka Opportunity Plan, ensuring that more students have the opportunity to receive a world-class education," said Edward Feasel, president of SUA. "Our goal is to prepare global citizens who can contribute positively to society, and this initiative is a crucial step towards achieving that."
Under the revised plan, families with annual incomes of $200,000 or less will receive full tuition coverage. For those earning between $200,001 and $250,000, the coverage will be 50%, and for those earning between $250,001 and $300,000, the coverage will be 25%. This new structure replaces the previous partial aid system, offering clearer and more substantial financial support for a broader range of families.
In addition to the expanded tuition coverage, students may also apply for additional financial assistance to cover expenses such as housing, meals, books, and transportation through existing federal, state, and institutional aid programs. The Soka Opportunity Plan combines merit scholarships, need-based grants, and institutional funding to ensure that every admitted undergraduate receives a tailored financial aid package.
Students are automatically considered for the Soka Opportunity Plan as part of the university's financial aid process. To be eligible, they must submit all required financial aid materials by the priority deadline and meet the program's specific requirements. The plan is designed to benefit a significant portion of SUA's approximately 480 undergraduate students, as well as future incoming classes.
