The program, set to begin its first online classes on December 20, 2026, aims to bridge the gap between apprenticeship learning and higher education, providing a clear pathway for career advancement in the construction industry.
The collaboration is a significant step in addressing the industry's growing need for skilled professionals. According to John Mascaro Jr., president and CEO of Mascaro Construction Company, the partnership is crucial in meeting the needs of the construction industry by combining trade expertise with higher education. Mascaro Construction Company has been named to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's "Top Workplaces" for 10 consecutive years, highlighting its commitment to fostering a skilled workforce.
The jointly developed curriculum focuses on the career growth of apprentices and journey workers, as well as community college students and career and technical education graduates. It offers a pathway into construction management that also prepares students for increased leadership opportunities in areas such as safety and construction technology. The program includes three certificates in construction management, construction safety, and construction technologies, each serving as progression milestones toward the bachelor's degree.
Nicole Dafoe, dean of the College of Engineering and Science at Slippery Rock University, emphasized the importance of this partnership.
The program is designed for adults balancing work and education, combining online coursework with in-person learning opportunities. The first information session is scheduled to take place over Zoom on Monday, October 12, at 7 p.m.
The partnership rests on the mutual mission of education and excellence, with both organizations dedicated to building the next generation of leaders in the construction industry. The program aims to create new opportunities for workers and meet the needs of the construction industry by connecting skilled trades learning with university coursework in construction leadership, safety, and building technologies.
