BEIJING, Sept. 7, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- The Shengjing Bank Shenyang Marathon 2026, held on September 6, attracted over 22,000 runners from across China and internationally, showcasing the event’s growing appeal and international reach. The race, which featured both a full and a half marathon, started from the Shenyang Olympic Sports Center. Kenyan and Ethiopian athletes emerged victorious in the men’s and women’s full marathon categories, respectively. Meanwhile, Chinese runners, Zhang Xiaorui and Zhao Na, took the top spots in the half marathon.
While the marathon served as a platform for competitive running, it also emphasized inclusivity and mutual care. Thirty first-aid-certified runners were deployed to assist elderly participants, visually impaired athletes, and wheelchair users. This approach highlighted the spirit of equality and support that the event aimed to promote.
The race route was adorned with unique northeastern Chinese dialect slogans like "Laotie never gives up," which encouraged runners to persevere. These slogans, rich in local character, reflected the straightforwardness, optimism, resilience, and hardworking spirit of northeastern China. The enthusiastic local support was further demonstrated through the "Laotie cheering teams," which staged performances such as heavy industry-themed dances and Yangge folk dances. The route was punctuated by a 100-meter-long "cheering corridor" on a bridge over the Hun River, where crowds of local citizens added to the festive atmosphere.
Runners were also treated to a cultural experience as they received a "cultural tourism passport" upon registration. This allowed them to explore Shenyang’s attractions, including the Shenyang Imperial Palace, Zhang Xueliang's Former Residence Museum, and the Shenyang Financial Museum, which were free to visit from September 5 to 11.
Shenyang's Shengjing Bank Shenyang Marathon not only celebrated athletic prowess but also served as a platform to highlight the city's cultural heritage and hospitality. The event demonstrated how sports can foster a sense of community and promote local pride. By integrating local culture and traditions into the race, the marathon organizers ensured that participants and spectators alike enjoyed a memorable and enriching experience.
