Shanghai Tansfer Crane Offers Solutions for Legacy Port Crane Parts

Shanghai Tansfer Crane Co., Ltd. (TSF Crane) has developed a comprehensive solution to ensure the continued operation of legacy port cranes despite the discontinuation of original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts. The company offers three viable routes to address this challenge: reproducing parts to the original drawing, reverse engineering, and redesigning for the current duty cycle.

According to TSF Crane, parts discontinuation is not a gradual process but a cliff. Once the stock of spare parts runs out, the machine enters a "waiting for one part" state, which can disrupt operations. This issue is more likely to arise with older equipment, as its wear parts have been replaced multiple times and no longer match the original specifications. Additionally, many terminals have pushed the duty cycle of their equipment beyond its original design values, leading to increased wear and tear.

TSF Crane provides a detailed process for reverse engineering when no original drawings are available. The process involves assessing a sample part, measuring and scanning it to create a 3D data model, producing a technical drawing, obtaining customer approval, and finally producing and inspecting the new part. The company emphasizes the importance of material matching, conducting hardness testing and chemical composition analysis to select an equivalent material that can reach comparable mechanical properties.

In cases where the old design is no longer suitable, TSF Crane recommends redesigning the part to accommodate the current duty cycle. This approach involves keeping the original interfaces and mounting dimensions while applying targeted reinforcement to the structure and material. The company notes that redesigning does not mean starting from scratch but rather making targeted improvements to address the current problem without requiring changes to adjacent components.

TSF Crane also highlights the importance of verifying the fit of the new part on the legacy machine. This involves measuring adjacent mating parts such as bearing housings, shafts, and rails, and conducting an assembly check. The company ensures that the new part is dimensionally re-checked and inspected before shipment, providing detailed records to the customer.

The quality of the new parts is guaranteed through the provision of comprehensive quality documents, including material certificates, non-destructive testing reports, hardness sampling records, dimensional re-check records, and assembly inspection records. These documents are particularly important for the acceptance team on older equipment, as factory documentation for legacy models is often no longer available.

TSF Crane serves a wide range of port lifting equipment, including ship-to-shore cranes, rubber-tyred and rail-mounted gantry cranes, ship unloaders, and portal cranes. The company offers complete spare part packages for these models, covering systems such as hoisting, travelling, power supply, and rail. The market outlook for port cranes is expected to grow significantly, with the global overhead cranes market forecast to reach US$ 7,221.24 million by 2028, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.2% from 2022 to 2028.
