Shane Strum Named CEO of Memorial Healthcare System

HOLLYWOOD, Fla., Shane Strum has been named President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Memorial Healthcare System, a position he has held on an interim basis since September 2024. The South Broward Hospital District Board of Commissioners made the decision following two years of significant growth and expansion under Strum’s leadership.

During his interim tenure, Strum spearheaded the opening of two new freestanding emergency rooms in Miramar and Pembroke Pines, with a third currently under construction in Hollywood. Additionally, the board approved the start of construction on Memorial Regional Hospital’s new $670 million bed tower. Strum also overseen investments in advanced technologies, including robotic surgery, cardiovascular care, and imaging technology. Notably, the system expanded its Better Together collaboration with Broward Health, initially focusing on primary and maternal care but now extending into oncology, neurosciences, and graduate medical education.

In a statement, Elizabeth Justen, Chair of the Board of Commissioners, highlighted Strum’s achievements, saying, "Shane has delivered results our community can see and feel: new emergency rooms, a state-of-the-art bed tower now under construction, and the strongest financial performance in Memorial's history."

Strum, a native of Broward County with nearly three decades of experience in healthcare, public service, higher education, and hospital governance, expressed his gratitude and enthusiasm for the new role. "I'm grateful for the trust this board and this community have placed in me," he said. "Memorial is stronger today than it's ever been, and I'm excited to keep building on that momentum, expanding access to care, growing our clinical capabilities, and taking the Better Together collaboration with Broward Health to the next level."

Strum will continue to lead both Memorial Healthcare System and Broward Health, with the two organizations remaining separately governed, each with its own independent board, budget, and operations.

Memorial Healthcare System, with its six hospitals including Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital, will continue to operate as the South Broward Hospital District, serving the patient communities in the region. The system, based in South Florida, is recognized as a national leader in quality care and patient, physician, and employee satisfaction.
