Scania Unveils Electric Truck Solution for Long-Haul Operations

SÖDERTÄLJE, Sweden, Sept. 14, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- Scania, the Swedish truck manufacturer, has unveiled a groundbreaking solution that addresses the long-haul electrification challenge in the transport industry. The new configuration enables electric trucks to cover up to 720 kilometers on a single charge, making electric long-haul operations more feasible and practical.

The solution combines expanded battery capacity, advanced charging technology, and practical vehicle configuration. By placing additional battery packs behind the cab, Scania has increased the installed battery capacity without relying solely on chassis-mounted batteries. In a typical configuration, two MP20 battery packs can be mounted behind the cab, adding approximately 356 kWh of installed capacity in addition to the batteries on the chassis and under the cab.

This expanded energy capacity, combined with Scania's MCS (Megawatt Charging System) charging technology, supports electric long-haul tractor configurations using standard European trailer combinations. The new design allows for a 6x2*4 European trailer combination, even when the total vehicle length exceeds 16.5 meters. This configuration enables customers to combine long electric range with practical trailer compatibility and maintained turning performance.

Scania's innovative approach includes the use of its IVD (Increased Vehicle Dimension) front, which reduces energy consumption by up to 3 percent, depending on the specification and operation. The IVD front helps to minimize wind resistance, a significant factor in the energy consumption of electric trucks.

Lars Gustafsson, Senior Vice President and Head of Solutions Management at Scania, emphasized the practicality of the solution. "Electric trucks are already part of the transport system, but long-haul operations place very different demands on range, payload, and charging. With this solution, Scania is showing how these elements can come together in a practical way for customers who want to electrify demanding long-distance routes."

The new configuration addresses several key challenges faced by transport operators. These include the ability to cover demanding routes, carry the required load, and charge in a way that fits real transport schedules. By offering a range of up to 720 kilometers, Scania's solution helps operators balance range, payload, and charging needs, making electric long-haul operations more viable.

The solution is designed to support selected long-haul 6x2*4 tractor configurations with standard European trailer combinations. This means that operators can now consider electric trucks for longer routes without compromising on payload or trailer compatibility. The expanded battery capacity and advanced charging technology ensure that the vehicles can operate efficiently and effectively, even on extended journeys.
