Ana Botín, executive chair of Santander, highlighted the bank’s strategic investment in Chile during a keynote address at the ChileDay Madrid 2026 event. The event, which brought together government officials, business leaders, and investors, focused on Chile’s growth opportunities and its position in the global economy.

Botín emphasized the importance of leveraging Chile’s strengths, including its strategic resources, openness to the world, and solid institutions. She noted that these advantages could be translated into investment, growth, and job creation, with a particular emphasis on the role of technology and artificial intelligence in driving productivity.

Santander’s new investment plan in Chile, announced during the event, totals US$800 million over the next three years. This plan includes the recent acquisition of the life annuity business, as well as significant investments in technology development, branch upgrades, and the development of Campus Santander, the bank’s new corporate headquarters.

Andrés Trautmann, CEO and country head of Santander Chile, underscored the potential of Chile in a global environment marked by intense competition to attract capital. He highlighted the country’s institutional stability, integration with international markets, and recognized macroeconomic discipline. Trautmann also pointed to the momentum in sectors such as mining, energy, infrastructure, and logistics, which place Chile in a favorable position to resume economic growth.

The new investments will enable Santander to deepen its use of technology, data, and artificial intelligence to improve the customer experience, simplify processes, and enhance its responsiveness. This will be complemented by investments in the physical network, under a strategy that combines digital services with in-person assistance at WorkCafé locations.

Trautmann welcomed the renewed prominence of capital markets modernization on the economic agenda. He expressed optimism about the long-awaited capital markets reform, which he believes will help channel savings and investment toward concrete needs. The reform will facilitate access to homeownership for more families, expand financing alternatives for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and entrepreneurs, and simplify or update rules that have remained in place over time and now hinder the entry of new local and international players.

As of June 30, 2026, Santander Chile had total assets of CLP 70,323,331 million (US$ 76,348 million), total gross loans at amortized cost of CLP 41,426,628 million (US$ 44,976 million), total deposits of CLP 32,390,791 million (US$ 35,166 million), and shareholders' equity of CLP 4,974,214 million (US$ 5,400 million). The bank employs 8,315 people and has 224 branches throughout Chile.

The US$800 million investment plan underscores Santander’s commitment to Chile, a country where the bank has been operating for decades. The plan aims to strengthen the bank’s presence in the region and support Chile’s economic growth through technological innovation and strategic investments.
