ProCure reminds men to monitor PSA fluctuations for prostate cancer screening

Dr. Edward Soffen, a prostate cancer specialist with over three decades of experience, shared his personal journey, highlighting the importance of vigilance in cancer screening.
According to Dr. Soffen, his PSA test results were lower than they had been six months prior, but his urologist noted the result was labile, meaning it fluctuates. This led to further testing, including a urine DNA test, which indicated a 50 percent malignancy risk. An MRI and biopsy ultimately confirmed the presence of cancer. Dr. Soffen emphasized the significance of monitoring any changes in PSA levels, even if they are within the generally accepted "normal" range.
"Men with a 'normal' PSA, under 4 ng/mL, should still be aware of any fluctuations and discuss additional testing options with their doctors," Dr. Soffen advised. "PSA alone can sometimes miss cancers, and other tests can provide a more comprehensive picture."
After considering various treatment options, including CyberKnife, radioactive seed implants, high dose rate brachytherapy, conventional radiation with IMRT, and protons, Dr. Soffen opted for proton therapy. He stated, "It was protons, hands down. There was no question I made the right choice."
Dr. Brian Chon, Medical Director at ProCure, echoed Dr. Soffen's sentiments, noting, "PSA alone doesn't always tell the whole story. Trends over time and testing when something looks slightly off can mean the difference between an early diagnosis and a missed one."
