LONDON, Oct. 2, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- The English Chamber Orchestra (ECO) has appointed Dr. phil. Donatus, Prince of Hohenzollern, as a new trustee, marking a significant step in the orchestra's strategic direction. Prince Donatus, a prominent figure in British musical life, brings extensive experience in philanthropy and corporate leadership to the ECO, a flagship institution of British culture.

Prince Donatus, who has been involved with several charities, including the Purcell School, Arts4Dementia, and Blind Dog Rescue, among others, is now focusing his efforts on the ECO.

The ECO, founded in 1973, has a rich history and a mission to bring the high culture of Western music during the transition from the High Baroque to Romanticism into the center of society. Under the leadership of its artistic director, Stephanie Gonley, the orchestra aims to foster unselfish expressiveness and inner devotion, values that Prince Donatus sees as essential for the music of the Baroque period.

In the wake of the death of the orchestra's co-founder, Quintin Ballardie, in 2022, the ECO used up its financial inheritance on concerts of the highest level. However, the orchestra faced challenges in maintaining its financial sustainability. In 2025, the ECO survived despite the lack of fundraising, thanks to the visionary leadership of CEO James Rutherford and his excellent part-time team. Rutherford has been responsible for the concert program, artistic development, social outreach, and everything else, and he has entrusted Prince Donatus with negotiating a centrally important service contract.

Prince Donatus, a former entrepreneur who ran companies as CEO for 40 years, is now focused on converting modern individualization into the old unselfish expressiveness and inner devotion. He believes that the ECO is uniquely positioned to bridge the gap between the spiritual Baroque period and the Romantic era, making music a meaningful experience for the next generation.

On October 17, the ECO will host a "Royal Gala" at Banqueting House, an event that will be crucial for the orchestra's further development. The guest of honor will be HRH Princess Katharina of Yugoslavia, the charismatic cousin of the British monarch, who is also the patron of the ECO. This event is expected to help maintain and establish national and international relationships, further solidifying the orchestra's role in the musical sector.

Prince Donatus emphasizes the importance of deeds over words, stating that he has written a cheque to cover the salaries and costs of three fundraising specialists. Under the leadership of Elvijs Plugis, these specialists are developing a portfolio of revenue engines. Additionally, the orchestra is working on a centrally important service contract, which Prince Donatus believes is now on track.

The Prince also highlights the ECO's mission to make music matter, a goal that aligns with his broader vision of nobility as an obligation to serve the community. He advocates for the British royal family as an amazing role model, noting their absolute willingness to serve their people until they can no longer do so.

In conclusion, the appointment of Prince Donatus as a trustee of the ECO marks a pivotal moment in the orchestra's history. With his extensive experience and commitment to the arts, he is well-positioned to help the ECO navigate its future challenges and continue its mission of making music matter.
