Posit and AWS Launch Positron on Amazon SageMaker for Data Science Teams

Posit and Amazon Web Services (AWS) have announced the public preview of Positron on Amazon SageMaker, a new integrated development environment (IDE) designed for R and Python data scientists. This integration brings Posit's next-generation IDE directly into Amazon SageMaker Studio, providing a seamless and governed environment for data science teams.

The new offering is part of a broader strategic collaboration between Posit and AWS, which was signed in September 2025. Positron on Amazon SageMaker is now available in preview, allowing R and Python teams to work within a single, governed environment that runs entirely inside their AWS account. This means that data and credentials remain within the customer's AWS boundary, ensuring security and compliance.

Positron on Amazon SageMaker includes several key features designed to enhance the data science workflow. It comes with R, Python, and Quarto pre-installed, along with Posit Assistant, an in-IDE AI assistant powered by Amazon Bedrock. Posit Assistant is enabled by default and can be used to streamline tasks and provide real-time assistance. The environment also supports multi-console functionality, a variables pane, and a data viewer, all integrated with comprehensive help documentation.

Eric Pité, Senior Vice President of Product and Strategy at Posit, highlighted the benefits of this new integration. "That was a deployment problem, not a governance problem. Positron on Amazon SageMaker runs inside the customer's own account, so there is nothing to move and nothing to trade away."

The integration is already showing measurable results for early adopters. TruDiagnostic, a healthcare analytics company, trained 1,600 models in one hour using Posit Workbench with Amazon SageMaker, significantly reducing their development time and cloud infrastructure costs. NASA's People Analytics team also benefited, transforming weeks of manual workforce analysis into real-time, interactive scenario planning.

This new offering extends the existing Strategic Collaboration Agreement between Posit and AWS, deepening integrations across Amazon SageMaker, Amazon Bedrock, Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (Amazon EKS), Amazon Object Storage (Amazon S3), and AWS Lambda. The combination is expected to streamline workflows and accelerate the adoption of AI and machine learning technologies within enterprises.
