Plootus today released its Average Health Insurance Cost by State & Plan Report, analyzing 2025–2026 health coverage benchmarks using data from the Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF), CMS, and HHS. The report reveals that annual employer-sponsored health insurance premiums have reached $9,325 for single coverage and $26,993 for family plans.

While employers continue to cover the majority of worker premiums, employee contributions now average $1,368 annually for single coverage and $6,296 for family plans. Meanwhile, individuals buying unsubsidized Silver benchmark plans on the ACA Marketplace face an average monthly bill of $497, with extreme state-level variations ranging from $325 in New Hampshire to $1,277 in Vermont.

"Health insurance premiums represent one of the most volatile and unavoidable line items in working households," said the Plootus Research Team. "Without active optimization, healthcare costs quietly siphon off thousands of dollars that should be building long-term wealth."

Key Findings:

Employer Plan Totals: Single coverage averages $9,325/year (workers pay $114/month); family coverage hits $26,993/year (workers pay $525/month). ACA Benchmark Rates: Second-lowest Silver plans for a 40-year-old average $497/month nationally before subsidies. Subsidized Relief: Eligible ACA enrollees utilizing Premium Tax Credits pay an average subsidized rate of just $66/month. Geographic Disparities: Vermont ($1,277/mo), Wyoming ($950/mo), and West Virginia ($850/mo) remain the most expensive ACA markets.

The report outlines critical cost-reduction moves, including pairing High-Deductible Health Plans with Health Savings Accounts (HSAs)—which allow up to $4,300 in individual tax-free savings for 2026—and strategic income management during early retirement to maximize ACA subsidies.

"Managing healthcare costs during your working years isn't just about covering doctor visits—it's a core wealth-building lever," added the Plootus Research Team. "Maxing out an HSA today creates a triple-tax-advantaged healthcare vault for retirement."
