BIDDEFORD, Maine, Sept. 26, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- communities across the United States came together to celebrate National Ostomy Awareness Day, a significant event that highlights the challenges and resilience of those living with an ostomy. United Ostomy Associations of America (UOAA) organized a series of events, including the Run for Resilience Ostomy 5k, to raise awareness and support for the ostomy community.

UOAA estimates that between 725,000 and 1 million people in the United States are living with an ostomy, which are life-saving surgical procedures often performed to manage conditions like cancer, accidents, and inflammatory bowel disease. This year, the awareness day took on added significance as the ostomy community faced a critical threat to their medical supplies. UOAA and national stakeholders are calling for immediate public advocacy and Congressional intervention to prevent Medicare competitive bidding from affecting the availability of essential ostomy and urological supplies.

The Run for Resilience Ostomy 5k, a community volunteer effort, was held in several states, including Alabama, Idaho, Illinois, Michigan, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, and South Carolina. The event, sponsored by Convatec, Coloplast, and Hollister, aimed to support UOAA's nonprofit programs, educational resources, and national advocacy efforts. Participants ran in support of the ostomy community, emphasizing the importance of continued access to specialized medical supplies.

In addition to the 5k events, UOAA hosted a worldwide Virtual Ostomy 5k and organized family-friendly in-person 5k events. These activities were designed to engage the broader community and raise awareness about the unique challenges faced by those with an ostomy. The organization also welcomed everyone to a National Support Group meeting and encouraged social media participation through the hashtag #OstomyCommunity, allowing individuals to share their stories and connect with support networks.

Advocates in nearly 30 states have submitted requests to their state governors to officially recognize Ostomy Awareness Day, aiming to reduce stigma and increase public understanding. UOAA's efforts are part of a larger movement to ensure that the ostomy community has the necessary support and resources to thrive.

The Run for Resilience Ostomy 5k is a testament to the community's strength and unity. By coming together, participants and supporters are working to safeguard the medical supplies essential for those living with an ostomy. The event not only raises awareness but also highlights the ongoing need for advocacy and support in the medical community.
