OSCP Integrates ArduPilot on MK2 Series Drives Drone Technology

OSCP, a leading provider of inertial measurement units (IMUs), has announced the integration of ArduPilot on its entire MK2 series. This development marks a significant step in the company's commitment to enhancing drone technology, as showcased at the UAV Expo in Las Vegas this week.
At the expo, OSCP, operating under the name OSCPS Motion Sensing Inc., unveiled that all MK2 models now come with ArduPilot support. Users can download the ArduPilot pilot for OSCP's MK2 IMUs from docs.oscp.com, alongside integration documentation, C SDK, and Python examples.
For unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), the default fail-safe mode remains consistent across all models: the platform continues to fly until the satellite signal is lost. However, GPS and GNSS interference now extend far beyond declared conflict zones, and visual line-of-sight operations no longer ensure real-time monitoring of the craft. The gyroscope quality significantly impacts drift during these critical minutes.
The new ArduPilot pilot allows users to connect any MK2 device via standard RS-422 or CAN-FD interfaces. Designers can start with the MK2M2 module, measuring 40 x 40 x 25 millimeters, weighing 75 grams, and consuming 1.2 watts, before moving to the MK2E2 photonic module for tactical-level performance with the same pilot and interfaces.
The photonic technology is particularly suitable for drones due to its vibration resistance. MEMS gyroscopes are sensitive to acceleration, accumulating additional errors during prolonged vibrations and acceleration. In contrast, OSCP's photonic detection technology maintains polarization stability, making it a reliable choice for drone applications.
Kazem Zandi, OSCP's founder and CEO, commented, "Drones manufacturers have chosen ArduPilot for years, and they made the right choice. We're not asking anyone to switch their autopilot; we're simply improving the motion perception of the autopilot they already trust."
In a 21-minute trial with satellite positioning unavailable, an OSCP photonic IMU finished within 5.7 meters of the ground truth, compared to 20.5 meters for a MEMS unit with similar support.
