Open Doors to Future Possibilities Receives 205 Refurbished Laptops for Digital Literacy Program

SAN JOSE, Calif. — In a significant step towards bridging the digital divide, Open Doors to Future Possibilities (ODTFP), a nonprofit organization based in California, has received 205 refurbished laptop computers through the Digitunity and AT&T Connected Learning Digital Skills Program. This grant, awarded in April 2026, will significantly enhance ODTFP’s Digital Literacy Program by providing participants with the necessary technology to continue their learning journey beyond the classroom.

The laptops, refurbished by organizations such as 2nd Chance Computers and Human-I-T, aim to empower veterans, their family members, and low-income families in the Bay Area. ODTFP has been offering digital literacy training since 2023, but many participants faced challenges once they returned home, lacking a reliable computer. With this grant, participants who complete at least three workshops will receive a laptop, enabling them to further develop their digital skills, access vital services, and maintain connections with loved ones.

"Learning doesn't stop when class is over," said Dr. Simone Lundquist, Founder and Executive Director of ODTFP. "Having a reliable computer is not just about receiving technology; it's about taking home opportunity. It removes barriers to continued learning, job applications, accessing healthcare and veteran benefits, and building the confidence and skills needed to navigate today's digital world."

ODTFP offers weekly digital literacy classes at various locations in San Francisco, San Jose, and Mountain View, as well as at community partner sites such as the San Francisco VA and El Camino Senior Apartments. The classes cover essential skills like basic computer operations, internet navigation, email, online safety, Microsoft Office, job searching, and more.

One notable participant is a Navy veteran in his forties who, after completing three months of digital literacy classes, was able to secure a job as a bank teller. "Without a computer, I struggled to compete in today's job market," he shared. "These classes and the laptop I received have given me a new sense of independence and hope."

Julio Figueroa, Director of External Affairs at AT&T, emphasized the importance of the initiative. "Access to technology and digital skills can open doors to essential services, meaningful connections, and new opportunities," he said. "Through our collaboration with Digitunity and ODTFP, we're helping Bay Area veterans gain the tools and confidence they need to thrive in today's digital world."

As government services, healthcare systems, and veteran benefits increasingly move online, access to technology and digital skills has become more critical than ever. ODTFP, with the support of AT&T and Digitunity, aims to ensure that participants leave the program with the necessary skills and tools to continue learning and accessing vital resources.

Since its establishment in 2019, ODTFP has reached over 9,000 people, with 85% of participants making measurable progress toward their goals within six months. The organization provides a range of services, including counseling, meals, essential supplies, digital literacy training, homeless outreach, and community events, all designed to remove barriers and restore momentum for those who serve their communities.

At AT&T, corporate responsibility efforts are focused on bridging the digital divide. Since 2021, the company has committed $5 billion to initiatives that enhance connectivity, promote digital literacy, and improve access to high-speed internet, with a particular emphasis on uplifting communities, including students, older adults, and un- or underemployed individuals.

Digitunity, a national nonprofit organization, works to make computer ownership possible for everyone by connecting retired technology from businesses and government with trusted community organizations nationwide. This collaboration ensures that everyone has the technology needed to participate, compete, and prosper in the modern economy.
