PARIS, Oct. 15, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- A new study from Opella, the maker of Mucosolvan and Bisolvon, has provided compelling evidence that successful cough treatment should extend beyond traditional symptomatic relief to encompass a patient's overall well-being. The study, conducted in Italy, evaluated the effectiveness of Mucosolvan (Ambroxol) and Bisolvon (Bromhexine) in real-world conditions, offering valuable insights into the broader impact of these medications.

The study found that patients experienced fast relief from their cough symptoms after the first dose. According to the findings, 53% of bromhexine users and 41% of ambroxol users reported immediate relief. Additionally, 57% of bromhexine users and 44% of ambroxol users noted a reduction in the urge to cough after the first intake.

Beyond symptomatic relief, the study highlighted significant improvements in patients' daily functioning and social engagement. Patients reported a clinically meaningful improvement in the social impact of their cough within 72 hours, allowing them to engage more comfortably in conversations and everyday social activities.

Sleep quality was another critical aspect of the study. After just 48 hours, patients experienced substantial improvements in their sleep. Specifically, the difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, and sleep-related tiredness scores improved significantly. The percentage of patients reporting these challenges dropped by 59%, 56%, and 55% in each category, respectively.

Milena Leone, Global Brand General Manager of Opella, emphasized the importance of addressing the broader impact of coughs on daily life.

The study, a prospective, observational analysis, involved adult consumers who had purchased Mucosolvan or Bisolvon for an acute chesty cough. The evaluation covered a seven-day period using validated tools, including the Cough Severity Diary and the Leicester Cough Questionnaire. com).

In Germany, 58% of consumers make their cough and cold treatment decisions in-store, highlighting the pivotal role of pharmacists in recommending effective treatments. The study underscores the importance of considering the overall well-being of patients when evaluating the success of cough treatments, beyond just symptomatic relief.
