OC Japan Fair Expands with New Anime Zone and Traditional Cultural Experiences

OC Japan Fair, set to return this October, is expanding its offerings to celebrate Japanese pop culture and anime. The three-day festival, taking place from October 16 to 18 at the OC Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa, California, will feature a new JAPAN POP CULTURE ZONE, dedicated to popular anime titles such as DAN DA DAN and BLUE LOCK. This zone will occupy approximately half of the festival's indoor space, offering visitors a deeper dive into the world of Japanese animation.

The festival will also enhance its Cosplay & Ai♡Fes Idol Festival, with Saturday programming that includes cosplay, live performances by both Japan- and Southern California-based idols, and meet-and-greet opportunities. Nagoya-based idol group SAKURA GRADUATION will perform throughout the entire three-day event, adding to the excitement. Additionally, the AKIHABARA ELECTRIC TOWN area will return, recreating the vibrant atmosphere of Tokyo's famous pop culture district with attractions like an Akihabara-style maid café.

Beyond the pop culture highlights, visitors can enjoy traditional cultural experiences. The festival will feature Bon Odori, a traditional Japanese dance around a yagura tower, as well as the Asakusa & Nakamise Street area, which will showcase traditional performances and cultural programming. Ukonya and Sakon will perform throughout the event, while English-language rakugo performer Katsura Sunshine will introduce audiences to the Japanese art of comic storytelling.

Food enthusiasts will find more than 60 Japanese dishes and festival favorites, including okonomiyaki, takoyaki, yakisoba, yakitori, ramen, tonkatsu sandwiches, taiyaki, and shaved ice. Shoppers can explore a variety of booths offering anime merchandise, collectibles, traditional Japanese crafts, and other Japanese goods.

For those looking to experience a slice of Japanese history, the Oiran Dochu procession will take place on October 17 and 18. This reenactment of processions once held by the oiran, the courtesans of Yoshiwara in the Edo Period, will involve men and women dressed in Edo period costumes, walking from the main stage to Nakamise Street.

Admission to the festival has been reduced to make it more accessible. Presale tickets are available for $13.58 (including fees) from September 1 to September 30, and for $15.71 (including fees) from October 1 to October 15. General admission starts at $17.58 (including fees) on October 16. Free admission is available for children under 6 and seniors aged 65 and over.
