NYU Langone Health has announced the addition of three top orthopedic surgeons to its team, marking a significant step in enhancing its comprehensive and innovative care for athletes and active individuals. Dr. Sabrina M. Strickland, Dr. F. Winston Gwathmey, and Dr. Andreas H. Gomoll bring a wealth of expertise in sports medicine, hip preservation, and knee injuries, respectively.
Dr. Strickland, a nationally recognized sports medicine surgeon, will lead the Center for Patellofemoral Disorders at NYU Langone. Her focus areas include knee cartilage repair, patellar stabilization, ACL and meniscus surgery, and joint preservation. She earned her medical degree from Rush University and completed her orthopedic surgery residency and fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery. Dr. Strickland has a particular interest in using 3D-printed models of joints to refine surgical techniques, which she believes can lead to better patient outcomes. She has been honored by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, and the New York Weill Cornell Medical Center Alumni Council.
Dr. Gwathmey, a preeminent leader in hip preservation and arthroscopy, will head the Hip Preservation and Hip Arthroscopy Center at NYU Langone. He has developed a special interest in hip preservation surgery and arthroscopy, recognizing the importance of addressing joint and cartilage injuries before they worsen. Dr. Gwathmey comes to NYU Langone from the University of Virginia Health System, where he established the hip arthroscopy and preservation program, which became one of the region's highest volume centers. He earned his medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School and completed his orthopedic surgery residency and a fellowship in orthopedic sports medicine and shoulder surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital. His work with 3D-printed models of joints allows him to study examples that better reflect the natural variation in bone shapes seen in the clinic.
Dr. Gomoll, co-director of the Knee Preservation Center, will treat a wide range of knee problems, including ACL tears, patellar instability, and meniscus injuries in young athletes, as well as cartilage defects and early arthritis in middle-aged individuals. He also performs partial joint replacement for older adults and uses minimally invasive techniques to evaluate and treat the knee joint. Dr. Gomoll joins NYU Langone from the Hospital for Special Surgery, where he has been an attending surgeon specializing in joint preservation and sports medicine since 2018. He is double board certified in orthopedic surgery and sports medicine and has co-authored over 170 research publications. Dr. Gomoll's work with the MISHA Knee System, a shock-absorbing knee implant, has been recognized by the Food and Drug Administration.
NYU Langone Health is currently ranked No. 2 in the nation for orthopedics by U.S. News & World Report, and it is recognized for having the largest orthopedic residency program in the country. The institution's commitment to providing comprehensive, innovative care for athletes and active individuals underscores its position as a leader in orthopedic medicine.
