Northern Sun Energy Begins Construction on 11.5 MW Solar + 10 MWh Storage Project

Northern Sun Energy has commenced construction on a 11.5 MW solar plus 10 MWh storage project in Swansea, Massachusetts, for developer GeoFire Solar. The two community solar projects will participate in Massachusetts' SMART 3.0 solar incentive program.
The projects incorporate DC-coupled battery storage, a design that maximizes efficiency and minimizes power losses. Unlike AC batteries, which require three conversions, once to DC, then to AC for storage, and finally back to DC for consumer use, DC batteries allow electricity to travel directly from the solar panels to the storage system without the need for multiple conversions. This setup reduces conversion losses and enhances overall system efficiency.
Chris Balogh, Vice President and cofounder of Northern Sun Energy, emphasized the importance of close collaboration with all stakeholders and regulators.
Northern Sun Energy's project includes the use of Jinko DC batteries, which required detailed oversight. The company worked with equipment integrators and engineers from the design phase to resolve DC-coupling decisions, protection coordination, and battery siting. Other equipment partners involved in the project are ReneSola panels, APA fixed tilt racking, and SMA inverters.
