North Coast Repertory Theatre in Solana Beach, California, is set to premiere a new production that promises to captivate audiences with its portrayal of the legendary pianist, composer, and actor Oscar Levant. The West Coast Premiere of "Good Night, Oscar," a play by Pulitzer Prize winner Doug Wright, will run from September 16 to October 11, 2026.
Set against the backdrop of a fateful 1958 appearance on The Jack Paar Show, the play delves into the life of Oscar Levant, a man whose brilliance and wit were matched only by his profound struggles with mental illness and addiction. David Corlew stars as Oscar Levant, bringing to life the tortured artist who, despite his personal demons, maintained his capacity for devastating honesty and breathtaking artistry.
Megan Carmitchel portrays June Levant, Oscar's wife, providing depth to the character’s personal life. Jay DeYonker steps into the role of George Gershwin, adding another layer of historical significance to the narrative. Isaiah Frazilus, Brian Mackey, Jason Maddy, and Wyatt VanHazel round out the cast as Alvin Finney, Jack Paar, Bob Sarnoff, and Max Weinbaum, respectively.
Under the direction of Tom Frey, the production benefits from a talented design team. Michael Wogulus is responsible for the set design, Matthew Novotny for lighting, Elisa Benzoni for costumes, Tristan King for sound, and Christopher Williams for props. Shannon Humiston serves as the stage manager, while Kinzey Eastin acts as the production assistant.
The show will premiere on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, with a matinee on Friday, September 18. Additional matinees are scheduled for September 18 and October 2. The play will run daily, with evening performances on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Sunday at 7:00 PM, and Saturday evening performances at 8:00 PM. Matinees are held on Saturday and Sunday at 2:00 PM.
