At 21, Nigerian author Doreen Otaru has published her debut novel, "Seasons of Blooming," which offers a candid look at the uncertainties of growing up. Otaru, currently a student at the University of Texas at Austin, penned the book while completing her studies, providing a unique perspective on the challenges faced by young adults.

Set against the backdrop of New York and suburban Texas, "Seasons of Blooming" follows the journey of 18-year-old Solehn. Her life in New York is meticulously planned, with high social standing, tight-knit friendships, and a clear path toward the future. However, when sudden family instability uproots her during her senior year, Solehn is forced to relocate to an affluent suburb outside Austin, Texas. Struggling to adapt, she constructs a new persona, one that is harder and less vulnerable.

In her new environment, Solehn encounters Alexander, a reserved boy next door who challenges her newly formed defenses. Their relationship evolves, complicating Solehn's notions of intimacy, forgiveness, and pride. An unexpected tragedy further destabilizes her equilibrium, leading to the introduction of a mysterious yellow umbrella. This element of magical realism presents an impossible second chance, forcing Solehn to confront the central dilemma of the book: if we could change the past, would we know how to make the future better?

Since its late-spring debut, "Seasons of Blooming" has resonated with readers. Early reviews and discussions have highlighted the novel's emotional staying power.

Otaru's path to publication is intertwined with her broader professional ambitions. She is currently pursuing a career in the entertainment industry across Austin and Los Angeles, focusing on film and television production, marketing, and talent representation. Her long-term goal is to become an agent, helping other people make their dreams come true. Publishing "Seasons of Blooming" was her way of closing her childhood chapter and honoring her childhood dream of becoming a published author.
