COLUMBIA, Mo., Oct. 12, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- News Media Help Desk, a centralized hub for local news publishers, has introduced live chat support to assist journalists and editors with strategic digital challenges. This new feature, launched in December 2025, aims to provide high-quality, human assistance to newsrooms navigating the complexities of digital sustainability.

The live chat, available on the bottom-right corner of webpages at newsmediahelpdesk.org, is staffed by the same full- and part-time team that has been operating the Help Desk since its inception. Leah Becerra, the Product Director at the Help Desk, emphasized the importance of human interaction over artificial intelligence.

The chat service operates from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. (Central) on weekdays. During these hours, visitors will see a purple chat bubble indicating that the Help Desk team is online. Outside these hours, users can still submit questions, and if they provide an email address, a response will be sent directly to their inbox.

The live chat feature connects local news professionals to a wealth of resources within the Help Desk, including case studies, guides, and entries in the Scorecard database. It also serves as a bridge to the Help Desk's Digital On-Demand Services (DODS), a fractional matchmaking service launched in 2022 and managed by the Local Media Consortium. According to Liz Hayes, the DODS program manager, the new live chat support will help identify newsrooms that need more hands-on assistance and connect them with vetted, affordable contractors.

To access the Help Desk and its support chat, journalists and editors can visit newsmediahelpdesk.org.

The Help Desk, a free, centralized hub for local news organizations, aims to provide essential resources, expert assistance, and affordable hands-on help through DODS. This initiative is made possible by the collaboration between the Reynolds Journalism Institute and the Local Media Consortium, with support from a grant from The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
