New Fisher House Opens in Montrose for Veteran Families

Montrose, New York, Sept. 30, 2026 /CourierPR/ -- A new Fisher House has opened its doors at the VA Hudson Valley Healthcare System in Montrose, New York, providing a welcoming place for veteran families to stay while their loved ones receive medical care. The dedication ceremony, held today, was attended by Medical Center Director Dawn M. Schaal, Fisher House President David Coker, and Dr. Mark Koeniger, Assistant Under Secretary for Health for Clinical Services for the Department of Veterans Affairs.
The new Montrose Fisher House, the fourth in New York, will support families of veterans receiving inpatient mental health care and residential rehabilitation treatment. This addition strengthens the commitment of the Department of Veterans Affairs to caring for veterans and their families during critical times.
The 11,400-square-foot Fisher House, located near West Point, includes 12 wheelchair-accessible suites, a spacious kitchen, comfortable shared living and dining rooms, a laundry room, and a patio where families can relax and connect. The home is part of a network of 101 Fisher Houses across the country, in Germany, and in the United Kingdom. Fisher House Foundation built and gifted the home to the VA as part of its longstanding public-private partnership with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
The new Montrose Fisher House is situated in Westchester County, serving a region of more than 3,500 square miles across six counties. It will provide a place for families to stay while their loved ones receive medical care, ensuring that they can be close during their time of need.
The Fisher House Foundation has been instrumental in supporting military and veteran families. Since its inception, the program has saved military and veteran families an estimated $690 million in out-of-pocket costs for lodging and transportation. At full occupancy, the new Montrose Fisher House could save families a combined $700,000 in lodging expenses each year. Community support is an important part of every Fisher House, and the Hudson Valley has a proud connection to military service. The new home will provide a welcoming place to stay together, find comfort, and feel the support of the community.
The dedication of the new Fisher House also recognized the contributions of various organizations and individuals. The VA Hudson Valley Healthcare System, encompassing two main campuses, FDR Montrose in Westchester County and Castle Point in Dutchess County, along with a network of outpatient clinics, is dedicated to serving veterans across the Hudson Valley region. The new Fisher House at the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Hospital will give veteran families a place to call home while a loved one receives medical care, ensuring that they can focus on what matters most: being together.
