New citator and anti-hallucination features launched in LOIS Legal Research
SALT LAKE CITY — Legal research has taken a significant leap forward with the launch of new citator and anti-hallucination capabilities inside LOIS Legal Research, a tool developed by Filevine. These features aim to address the most costly errors in legal practice: erroneous citations that can lead to sanctions and career setbacks.
The new citator reads through case law to determine whether a holding remains valid, even catching negative treatments that other Shepardizing tools might miss. Meanwhile, the anti-hallucination technology verifies every citation in an attorney's brief, ensuring that every quote is accurate and every opinion truly supports the underlying claim.
According to Filevine, these advancements are crucial in an era where AI-generated errors are becoming increasingly common. "Courts are starting to penalize attorneys for these mistakes," noted Ryan Anderson, CEO and co-founder of Filevine. "LOIS streamlines the verification process, reducing hours of work to mere minutes."
In a recent evaluation, Filevine's legal team tested LOIS against 68 federal filings that had already been sanctioned for fabricated or misused authority. They checked 2,073 citations and found 174 severe errors that the filing attorneys had overlooked. Additionally, LOIS caught all 14 "silent" negative treatments in a case set that other tools failed to identify.
Westlaw's KeyCite and Lexis' Shepard's failed to catch any of the negative treatments, highlighting the advanced capabilities of LOIS. "Our goal with LOIS is to give lawyers control before they file, not after a judge has found what they missed," Anderson emphasized.
Filevine plans to demonstrate these new features on September 10 during a live event titled "From Risk to Reliability: Check the Cite. See the Reasoning. Read the Opinion." The event will feature a demonstration of how LOIS checks citations, connects lawyers directly to primary sources, and integrates verification into the work process.
